Mustangs Plus' "Bullitt" Goes Hollywood!
Text by Ron and David Bramlett, Photos and Video by Jeff Bramlett

When was the last time the Black Charger was chased through the streets of San Francisco by the Green Bullitt Mustang? I mean, really chased, in real life, not on the movie screen or on a DVD. You would all have to say it was in 1968 when the cult classic movie "Bullitt" was being filmed. Not so! It happened on Tuesday, February 22, 2011, on a bright and sunny San Francisco day. I kid you, not. We were there!

It all started a week before with a phone call to Ron Bramlett here at Mustangs Plus in Stockton, California. The call came from a production company in Malibu, California. The person on the other end of the phone said that they would like to use Mustangs Plus' Bullitt Tribute Mustang for re-creating the famed Bullitt chase scene from the movie. Our first thought was, "Yeah, right! What kind of deal are they trying to get us into?" But, as we talked, it became clear that this was the real deal. The production company had arranged with the city of San Francisco to shut the streets down and to be able to film at many of the original locations for a music video for a Grammy winning artist. Our interest was peaked, to say the least!

The production company was rushing to meet the deadline and hopefully get a good day in San Francisco for the shoot. After a few phones calls back and forth and spending a couple of days getting all the details worked out, Mustangs Plus came onboard and readied our Bulllitt Tribute Mustang for the shoot. David Bramlett and his wife, Diane, took charge and got the Mustangs Plus' Bullitt over to San Francisco. Even as we unloaded the Bullitt from the trailer, we were assured that the cars would not be driven hard; no jumping or airborne scenes were planned. But, deep down in our hearts, we knew what was going to happen. Or, what we hoped would happen. And, it did!

The morning of the 22nd was a perfect morning in San Francisco. Not a cloud in the sky and it was just as sunny as it could be. The weather Gods had to be looking down and smiling on the shoot! It seemed that it was taking forever for them to get ready. Everything had to be perfect. Then suddenly, there was the call of "ACTION!" and a moment later, the squealing of tires came from up the street. The Black Charger rounded the corner followed a few moments later by the Bullitt Tribute Mustang. After 44 years, it was all happening again! The Black Charger was being chased through the streets of San Francisco by the Bullitt Mustang! It made my heart beat a littler faster as I watched it unfold and the cars disappeared out of sight. Then, after a few minutes of waiting, it happened all over again. And again, until they had the footage they needed. Then, it was off to the next location,

Jeff Bramlett, our Webmaster here at Mustangs Plus, was on hand and shot video clips and still pictures of the action at every location. Remember the scene where the bad guys in the Black Charger start down the hill and see the Bullitt Mustang in their rear view mirror? The production company, whose name we can't disclose at this time, spent a lot of time to recreate that shot. Remember where the Bullitt Mustang, in hot pursuit of the Black Charger, overshot the corner and had to backup, spinning it's rear tires, and taking off again? That scene was recreated. Remember the... well, you get the idea! To our delight, the cars were both driven a lot harder than first planned. The Black Charger got away with no damage at all but our Bullitt Tribute Mustang was not as lucky. When we had The Restomod Shop built the car, we put a little wider tires and wheels on it from original. Because of this, the tires caught the front fender lips and pulled them down. Just a little damage that The Restomod Shop can easily fix!

To see the finial product, we'll all have to wait for the music video to come out. Unfortunately, we can't tell you whose it is at this time. But, we have the video footage and the still pictures that Jeff shot and we can share them with you. Take a look at them and then tell us your Bullitt story! Were you a kid when you first was the movie? Did it make you love Mustangs? Or, are you a Charger fan? Did you build a Bullitt Mustang, too? Let us know and send us pictures! E-mail us at mustangs@mustangsplus.com and use the word "Bullitt" in the subject.

The final version is finally out for release! Take a look at this great work! It’s amazing to see our Bullitt Mustang as one of the STARS of the video.
