Exciting Times Lay Ahead For The Mustang
Once every five years, the Mustang hobby gets a real boost because the Mustang grows another 5 years older. In 1984, the Mustang turned 20 years old and was in the beginning stages of it's rein as America's favorite pony car. Mustang clubs from all over the world had Mustang 20th Anniversary Shows to commemorate the 20 year milestone. At the time, the Mustang Club of America (MCA) was just 8 years old and deeply involved in documenting the right ways to restore Mustangs back to original condition. With the MCA's enthusiasm, the celebration caught fire and Ford Motor Company actually sponsored not one, but two, Mustang 20th Anniversary Shows; one in the east and the other in the west. Ford also took this opportunity to unveil a new Mustang, the beautiful White with Red interior 1984 ½ 20th Anniversary Limited Edition Mustang G.T.350 which have become very collectable today. I know, I was there in 1984 at the Mustang 20th Anniversary Show at Cal Expo in Sacramento and saw first hand all of the excitement that was generated by the Mustang during this time. It was a great time when all of the local Mustang clubs worked together. All of the shows, plus Ford spending a ton of money to help promote the new Mustangs, truly made for great Mustang events everywhere. The enthusiasm of that time helped to push the Mustang hobby up to a new level. Well guess what, today the Mustang hobby is right at the beginning of this cycle again and it's already starting to happen!
With the Mustang's 45th anniversary just a short 14 months away, Mustang clubs from all over the world will soon be planning Mustang 45th Anniversary Shows. The MCA has recently announced that Ford's Mustang 45th Anniversary Show, of which the MCA will be the official host, will be held at Barber Motorsports Park near Birmingham, Alabama on April 17th, 18th and 19th, 2009. Early estimates are for 5,000 to 7,000 Mustangs, and possibly more, to take part in the show. I'm told there will be open track time, exhibition races, and parade laps around the race track that everyone can enjoy with their Mustang. But, in my opinion, getting there will be just as much fun as the show!
There will be convoys of Mustangs heading to Alabama from all over the United States with MCA members and guest from many different foreign countries along for the ride. Yes, again I speak from experience. Cindy and I have been a part of these pony drives, namely "Mustangs Across America" and "Mustangs in Motion", in which we have gone from Stockton, California to Charlotte, North Carolina and Nashville, Tennessee for Mustang anniversary shows. I have to tell you, it is always quite a thrilling trip and we are both looking forward to driving our '65 Mustang to Birmingham for the 45th!
My point in writing about the exciting times that lay ahead is to point out to you that you need to start getting your Mustang, and yourself, ready for the great times that lay ahead. Ford will be spending a lot of money to promote the Mustang and the 45th show and possibly unveil the next new design there, also. All of the local Mustang clubs in your area will be planning for the 45th. The Mustang, all years of Mustangs, will have the highest possible profile in the next 14 months leading up to the 45th. Your friends will be asking about your Mustang(s), if they know you are an owner. Between now and then will be a great time to enjoy your Mustang, no matter what year it is!
You can get even more enjoyment out of Mustang ownership by belonging to a Mustang club. If you don't belong to one of your local Mustang clubs, find out where they are and join. Believe me, they will welcome you. If you're interested in becoming a part of the worlds largest Mustang club, join the MCA. With over 12,000 members and growing, the MCA is a powerful voice in the Mustang hobby. I'll suggest that you also join the MCA Regional Club that's closest to you. Many people don't know it, but, the MCA has approximately 175 Regional Mustang Clubs all over the United States, Canada and in other foreign countries. If it's happening in the Mustang hobby, the MCA is in on it! Go to www.mustang.org for more information. By the way. You can belong to more than one club. Cindy and I belong to many different Mustang clubs and reading the newsletters that each club produces always let's us know if there's an event we want to attend. You'd be surprised at how many great days we've spent doing something with one of these Mustang clubs that we wouldn't have known about had we not gotten a their newsletter!
Also, I would like to take this time to invite everyone to drive their Mustang with us back to Birmingham for the 45th. Yes, I know that to do that takes a lot of planning and that most of you will not be able to go. That's why I'm writing about it now, so far in advance. If you would like to go, you'll have to plan your vacation time so that you have the time off. You'll have to save some money for the trip. You'll also have get that Mustang ready for the trip and that can mean anything from a tune up and checking the air in the tires to a complete restoration. So, I'm just putting the thought in your head. If there's one piece of advice I can give you, it's "Don't Wait Until The Last Minute!" If you're truly considering coming, don't hesitate to contact me direct and I'll make sure you get all the information as it becomes available.
If you decide to go on the trip, you'll have a blast! The route and hotel reservations are made months ahead of time so we'll know exactly how far we're driving and where we're staying every night. And, as we get closer to Birmingham, the group of Mustangs will get bigger, and bigger and bigger. There will be hundreds of Mustangs on the trip by the time we get there and to be a part of such an experience is indescribable!
Yes, exciting times are ahead for the Mustang hobby. I'm glad I'm going to be a part of them. You should plan to be a part of them, too!
Restomods In Reno Update
If you've been wondering about making plans to attend the 4th annual Restomods In Reno Show but haven't been sure if it's going to happen, let me proudly say that "The show will go on!" And it's due in a very large part to the great people who make up The Reno Mustang Club because they have offered to host this years show! While the overall picture is still a little bit cloudy, here are the details as best as we can lay them out at this time.
Ron Wheeler is my Reno Mustang Club contact in regards to the Restomods In Reno show for 2008. In a conversation with Ron W., he told me that Restomods In Reno is on track and set for Memorial Day Weekend, just as we have held it in the past. The exact dates are Friday, May 23rd to Sunday, May 25th, 2008. So, with that information, you can start making your travel plans to get to Reno and enjoy the show.
The exact location and hotel is still undecided at the time of my writing this article. However, Ron W. tells me that the club is looking at making a choice between two hotels as to where Restomods In Reno will be held in just a few days. The first on the list is the Grand Sierra Resort; the second is the Atlantis. Most of us who are familiar with Reno know these to be two of the best hotels in the business for car shows and displays. The Grand Sierra Resort, located just south of Highway 80 on the 395 Highway, is actually the old Reno Hilton which is where we've held the previous Restomods In Reno shows in 2005 and 2006. The other candidate, the Atlantis, is located on South Virginia Street a few miles south of downtown Reno. Both of these hotels have always been very well suited for car shows and I've attended car shows at both of them.
Ron W. tells me that at this time, one of the most important points of consideration, although not the only point of consideration being considered, is the price of the hotel rooms. As all of us who frequently travel know, the prices of hotel rooms have really escalated in the past few years. I understand that Ron W. is looking at the prices of the hotel rooms, plus how well the hotel will take care of the show, and make the decision soon. I'm sure that decision will be made before you receive this issue of Restomod Magazine.
Also, I have been contacted by Mustang Monthly and Mustang & Fords magazines. They will be sending people to cover the event for the magazines and to shoot feature cars for future issues. In the past, several of the Mustangs that have been at the Restomods In Reno show have been featured in both magazines. Some have even been cover cars for the magazines. Quite an honor in the Mustang hobby for the owners and their cars. Also, both Mustang Monthly and Mustang & Fords will present their Editors Choice Award to a deserving Mustang and it's owner. Or, in the case of the Mustang & Fords award, it could go to any Ford product. But remember. You don't even have a chance to win if you and your car are not at the show!
As soon as the exact location is locked in, you'll be able to go to the website, www.RestomodsInReno.com (all lower case), and get all of the hotel information. You'll also be able to download an entry form and schedule of the events. Please, if you know you're going to come, try to get your entry in as early as possible. The sooner the club knows how many people are going to come, the easier it is for them to plan for the event and the better show it will be for everyone. I look forward to seeing you there and to a terrific show!
Your New Mustangs Plus Catalog Is On The Way
If you're getting ready to buy parts to get your Mustang, Cougar, Falcon, Comet, etc. ready for spring duty, you'll be interested in this little tidbit of information. The new Mustangs Plus Mustang and Ford Parts Catalog is on its way to the printer and should arrive in your mailbox in the next few days. And what a catalog it is! We are really proud of it! We've added so many new items that it has grown to 514 pages of restoration and performance products for the cars that we all love! We guarantee that you will not want to be without one!
So how do you make sure you get one? The way you receive our new catalog, as well as Restomod Magazine, is to stay current on the Mustangs Plus customer mailing list. After each mailing is printed, we take our current list of customers that we have had contact with in the last 12 months and mail them a copy. It's as simple as that. The reason Im brining this up is that whenever I go to the shows, I'm always told by someone that they used to get Restomod Magazine, our sales flyers and our catalogs, but that they haven't gotten any lately. So it just made sense to give a reminder in this edition of Restomod News for you to stay current on the Mustangs Plus mailing list. You don't want us to stop sending Restomod Magazine, do you?
Keeping Restomod Magazine coming is easy. Here's how it works. When you make a purchase, you are added to our mailing list and you'll receive Restomod Magazine for 12 months. If we don't hear from you after 12 months, then we will stop mailing to you. We can only assume that you've either finished your project, sold your Mustang, or moved and are not getting our mailings. Every time you make a purchase, your name is updated on the mailing list for 12 months. But, it also happens that sometimes our customers just don't need anything from us for a year. But, they would still like to receive Restomod Magazine. This is fine with us. All you have to do is to call us and ask for your name to be updated on our mailing list. That way, you'll continue to receive Restomod Magazine for the next 12 months without having to buy anything.
It's important for companies like Mustangs Plus to let their customers know that they appreciate their business. Restomod Magazine is just one of the ways we've chosen to do that. But, there's also nothing quite as direct as saying it so here goes. To all of our customers, "Thank You" for letting Mustangs Plus help you with your project. Without your support, we wouldn't be able to be the type of business we are!
Until Next Time,
